British Land to sponsor the Discover Youth Project
British Land, joint owner of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, has agreed to sponsor the “Discover” Youth Project which is overseen by local charity, Time and Talents.
The education project provides opportunities, and qualifications, for young people who may not gain them in formal education helping to raise both confidence and self esteem.
The new funding will allow the existing project to be extended to Rotherhithe estates and schools, taking this to hard-to-reach young people, aged 13 – 16, in the area.
To-date, 17 young people have gained qualifications through “Discover” and team projects have included designing and producing fashion garments, digital imaging and film production.
Funding by British Land for the Discover project will total £16,300 and Ian Moore, manager of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, commented ‘Sponsorship of the project will directly benefit young people who live in Rotherhithe and the shopping centre will work closely with Time and Talents to encourage teenagers to embark on exciting new projects and gain a recognised qualification.”
"Discover has been running since October 2009 and has great support from the young people currently involved in the project. The generous sponsorship from British Land/Surrey Quays will enable us to reach more young people” said Claire Sexton, Youth Project Manager. “Discover is special because the young people are in control and have ownership from the beginning; deciding how the project is planned and the qualifications they want to gain. We look forward to working British Land, Surrey Quays, and with all the new young people that can benefit as a result of this grant”
“This grant is wonderful news for our charity” said Sophy Proctor, Director of Time and Talents. “It’s contributions such as this that really help add something to the local community."
The Discover Youth Project will launch at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on Saturday 12th March. The launch will showcase a recent photography project undertaken by current members, and shoppers will be able to purchase photographs on the day as well as learn more about Time and Talents.
