TUESDAY 20 DECEMBER

Graffiti Showcase at Surrey Quays!

Local charity Time and Talents will be showcasing a graffiti art project created by young people from the ‘Discover’ Youth Project at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.

The project, which is funded by British Land, joint owner of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, took place during August with six young people from the local area participating. The young people worked for two weeks with an experienced and talented artist, which enabled them to express themselves creatively and learn a popular art form. Four of the six went on to attend additional sessions to complete an AQA qualification!

The ‘Discover’ Youth Project is essentially an education project that provides opportunities, and qualifications, for young people who may not gain these in formal education helping to raise both confidence and self-esteem. British Land decided to help fund the project at the beginning of the year with a total sum of £16,300 and Ian Moore, manager of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, commented ‘Sponsorship of the project has directly benefited young people who live in Rotherhithe and the shopping centre has worked closely with Time and Talents to encourage teenagers to embark on exciting new projects and gain a recognised qualification.”

“Discover has been running since October 2009 and has great support from the young people currently involved in the project. The generous sponsorship from British Land/Surrey Quays has enabled us to reach more young people” said Claire Sexton, Youth Project Manager. “Discover is special because the young people are in control and have ownership from the beginning deciding how the project is planned and the qualifications they want to gain. We have enjoyed working with British Land/ Surrey Quays, and really pleased that young people have benefited as a result of their sponsorship.”

If you are interested to see what the team have created, then visit the centre on 21st December outside Tesco and find out how you can get involved in the ‘Discover’ Youth project or any other of the projects Time and Talents run.
