New shopping experience
We are proposing a new 10,600m² extension to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre which will provide 15-20 new shops and restaurants. This will allow the centre to attract modern retailers to create a vibrant centre which meets day to day shopping needs.
Will the design be sustainable?
The extension will be designed to be highly sustainable. We aim to achieve BREEAM Excellent through maximising the energy efficiency of the building, making use of renewable technologies and ensuring the efficient use of resources. A large area of the roof will be covered with solar panels which will reduce energy emissions by at least 20%.
What will the extension look like?
The new extension will sit in front of the existing entrances to the Shopping Centre, creating a new attractive frontage. The existing centre malls and shop fronts will also be refurbished.
As part of the design evolution of the scheme, and following the consultation process, there have been some amendments to the design of the extension. Rather than create an extension that looks like a separate addition to the current shopping centre, the updated design takes direct reference from the existing shopping centre, to create a more harmonious appearance.
The architectural approach and choice of materials more closely reflects that of the existing centre albeit in a modern manner.
The restaurants and shops in the new extension will be outward facing, creating an external public face for the Shopping Centre. This will create the first side of a new high street and will make the external area a safer and more attractive and vibrant route and destination in itself.
How will the extension benefit local communities?
The shopping centre extension will deliver a number of benefits to the local community:
- The extension will improve the retail offer and the range of services available to the local community, reducing the need for people to travel outside of the area for services, retaining investment in the area and securing the future of the local high street and Shopping Centre.
- We will be working with employment agencies to ensure opportunities for local people and businesses to get jobs and contracts during the construction of the extension and later once the new shops are open.
- It will act as a catalyst for the future development of the site and will allow the Council to achieve its vision for the area.
How will the proposal affect existing retailers?
The new shops will complement the existing retail offer in the Shopping Centre, as well as attracting new high street retailers with new large units.
The extension will also help to meet the growing demand for restaurants within the area, and will provide space for outdoor dining and create a new evening and night time destination.
The potential impact of the retail extension on existing shops has been analysed. The analysis concluded that the extension will benefit the existing shops and Lower Road by attracting more custom to the area which will result in ‘linked trips’ to other shops.
During the construction of the extension, the Shopping Centre will remain fully open.
