Transport
The proposal aims to improve transport connections to the Shopping Centre and to encourage sustainable transport choices for visitors and staff.
How will transport connections be improved?
New and improved walking and cycling connections will be provided through the site. The retail expansion will create a new high street which will link Lower Road and Surrey Quays Overground Station to Canada Water Underground Station and Greenland Dock.
East-west pedestrian and cycling connections will be greatly enhanced with public transport to the site also improved through the relocation of existing transport hubs and consolidating bus stops on Deal Porters Way. The consolidated bus stops will benefit from new, high quality passenger waiting areas and will be accessible for wheelchair users.
Will the development be accessible?
We will ensure the Shopping Centre is accessible for all through providing new stepped and ramped access to Surrey Quays Station, Lower Road and Hothfield Place. Bus stops will also be relocated and provided to full TfL accessibility standards with Legible London signage. Repositioning the bus stops, in combination with the proposed segregated cycle way towards Greenland Dock, will lead to the removal of an existing conflict between bus passengers and cyclists.
How will car park provision be affected?
The car park will be reconfigured in order to provide a more user friendly and efficient layout to maximise its use.
The extension will result in the loss of 277 parking spaces.
The reprovision of these spaces will be safeguarded through the outline planning application for a standalone single deck car park with small retail units. The application includes parameters plans which determine the footprint, height, length and width of the car park deck. The application also includes illustrative material to demonstrate how the deck may look.
This car park deck will only be built if monitoring with Southwark Council shows the main car park is operating near to capacity.
How will the car park fit into the Council’s wider aspirations for the area?
The car park will be designed as a single deck formation incorporating double fronted small retail units. This will allow the car park to aesthetically complement the height and look of the shopping centre and will be the second stage in the formation of a new high street
The deck is located in the most suitable location to ensure quality of parking provision and also to allow the future development of the northern parts of the site which the masterplan envisages as Phase 2 of the wider vision for the site.
Will cycle parking provision be improved?
We will be increasing the number of cycle parking spaces on the site, from the current 66 to 132 spaces, of which 68 will be covered. We will monitor the use of these spaces and will provide additional spaces if required.
